Cork City Sports

There is a long and proud tradition of athletics in SNCN culminating each year in May or June at the annual Cork Primary School Sports, known as ‘The City Sports’, in Páirc Uí Chaoimh. There is usually a great buzz of anticipation in schools in advance of the selection process. Budding Olympians may be seen practicing their running for weeks beforehand. Competition is keen in school and it is a great honour and achievement to be one of the two pupils in each age group who qualifies to represent their school at this great event.

Once the selection process is complete the training begins. The 30 or more students may be seen training at Erin’s Own pitch after school in the weeks leading up to the big day. The emphasis is always on fun and enjoyment as well as making the most of our talents.

Over the years our athletes have been very successful at ‘The City Sports’. They have regularly returned to school with many trophies for 1st, 2nd and 3rd, with particular success inthe relay events. This interest in athletics has led to our pupils joining various athletics clubs around Cork with great success. Many pupils go on to run competitively in secondary schools, Universities and even as adults.

2012

This year was a particularly successful year at the City Sports which was held on Friday May 18th. Four of our girls came 1st in their individual sprints and then went on to represent the school in the County Finals. The U11 girls relay team also finished 1st.

Many won 2nd or 3rd prizes. As a result, the team won the trophy for Best Overall School in their Roinn again this year. The boys also came home with trophies won against stiff competition. The day was thoroughly enjoyed by all despite the wet and cold conditions.
